Day 88 - 11 January 2011

My walking partners today were Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant - they were discussing the quintessential art of being English.

As I walked out of the door, I scolded myself for forgetting my scarf, but as it happened, it was so mild out there this morning, that I would melted had I taken it with me. A whole 6 degrees. In fact, I regretted wearing my padded gillet which I've been wearing every day since November as it's been so cold.

It was misty and murky, but the sky was clearing to show the stars. I headed up on the coastal road towards Bournemouth, but the sound of the sea was so immense that I broke my rule of avoiding the promenade in the dark and headed towards Cafe Riva, which leads down to the beach.

I always worry that if anyone jumped out at me along the promenade in the dark, there wouldn't be a soul about to help. But I saw two runners and immediately felt safer.

The sea was amazing. The waves were breaking miles out and it was what they they term as a "messy surf". The 35mph gusts of last night had calmed down to just 17mph this morning and the sea had actually reached the promenade, as there was seaweed strewn everywhere. I would not want to have been a fisherman last night.

I see by my footpod that I walked much quicker this morning - I must have been worried down there on the beach!! 4.3mph!
