Day 154 - 01 April 2011

Friday (yippeeeeee)
60 Minutes' Power Walk

I couldn't believe how warm it is out there...if you could eliminate the rain and the wind, it would be like summer. But it was still raining a fine rain and there was definitely wind blowing . It was 11 deg C with a 15mph SW wind and 29mph gusts.

As I'm heading towards Sunday's marathon, I'm mindful of making sure that I don't trip or walk awkwardly and start off any unwanted pains. I'm sure my body is trying to get a cold, in fact its been trying all week, but I'm not having any of it.

So it was out into the dark, rainy morning. Once out though, as always, it's not so bad. Ian had already started out, so my aim was to catch him up.

In order to shield ourselves from the wind, we took the most sheltered route, which was along the high street. This means that there are far more people and cars out and about - mostly bakers and newspaper vans delivering papers. So lots to see.

I was listening to the second podcast download of the Comic Relief Chris Moyles' Show, which had me giggling throughout the entire journey. As we headed out towards the sea and back east towards home, I was taking in the scenery that I really enjoy. The cliffs, the sea and a great view of the sky. It was very cloudy of course, because it was still raining, but I could definitely detect daylight breaking.

The sea was amazing - there's a 5ft swell, which meant high waves breaking onto the beach. No doubt there'll be even more sand up on the prom.

The forecasters have promised a brighter day later, with temperatures hitting 18 Deg. How fab.

Have a great Friday everyone.  And welcome April!! \o/...\o/...\o/

Day 150 - 29 March 2011

Tuesday
3 mile run, 2 mile power walk

After completing my hour of beach running intervals last night, my legs felt tired this morning and for a moment or two, I was tempted to go back to sleep for another hour. But experience has taught me that I actually feel better for getting up and getting out. Plus the fact that today's walk is a milestone number, so it had to be done.

I took my scarf, as I thought it was going to be cold, and walking out towards the east and the north, it was. The temperature was 7 deg C with 3mph NNE wind and 7mph gusts. No biggy, but it did feel chilly. However, as I then headed south, the scarf had to be taken off and tied around my middle and I was also near to removing my fleece after I had started running - wayyyy to much clothing!

The weather was quiet so the sea was loud again this morning. I couldn't see any stars as like yesterday, it was misty and cloudy. But I could see the orange quarter-moon again this morning.

I came across a cat who resolutely stood in my path until the very last minute - and then felt brave enough for me to take its picture. It was a pretty little thing.

Mr Early was early again - which has an effect of making me feel as though I'm really late. But he was the only soul around. Mr Rude Navy, Mr Alsatian - or even Dave was out this morning. I haven't seen my friendly police car in weeks...I reckon they've changed their route, which is rather a shame. Now I'll never know whether they'll ever wave now.

I stopped to quickly check how my HRM was doing, only to find that it had stopped and was showing "Please check your transmitter strap". Darn. I had soaked the strap in cold water before putting it on, so I have no idea why it had stopped working. But frustratingly, it started working again by the time I got back home again.

I'm aware of my training sessions this week, as I'm facing 6.5 hours and a 22 mile training walk in Chichester on Sunday. Well...let's say that I'm hoping to get to 22 miles, as I'll be looking to be completing 26.2 miles within the same time in June. The knee felt good this morning, as did the hip.

I spent much of the run trying to think of what to wear this afternoon - I'm out at an exhibition, but will have to be walking miles to get there as all the car parks will be full.

Have a great Tuesday everyone. 3 more sleeps until Friday Smile

Monday (Already?????)
Power Walk - 60 minutes

It was a perfect morning for a power walk. 7 deg C with just a 3mph NNE wind. And total darkness throughout the entire walk again. I chose the latest episode of The Now Show and headed eastwards.

I looked across to the sea and the beach was shrouded in a light mist. The surf was loud though and making a comforting sound of the water breaking onto the sand. As I looked up into the sky towards the east, I spotted something that at first, was barely visible, given the amount of mist. But as I walked on, the sky started to clear and it was the moon - a quarter moon - and dark orange. Stunning.

Throughout the whole weekend, we have enjoyed a still, mirror-like sea. My friend Debs and her husband were out in their kayak on Saturday and the conditions were perfect for them.

I then spotted Mr Early far into the distance, who was *ahem* early this morning. Usually, I'm walking along the same road as him, going the opposite way, but today I saw him way off in the distance with his bright yellow cycling jacket and xeon headlights.

Heading northwards, I was enjoying even more flowers in bloom...everything seems to have blossomed early this spring - or does it just appear that way?

I was trying not to think of how painful my right knee was today. I had overcooked it on my run yesterday and it was still sore on the inside, at the back of the kneecap. I really do need to get this sorted before the marathon in June, otherwise it's going to really give me grief.

I started up the long Nemesis Hill, still in complete darkness. Although by this time, I had caught up with Ian, who had left much earlier than I had, so I was very pleased with my pace. We picked up a bit of speed as we got to the top of the hill and headed back towards the sea again.

The solar bellybins were uncomfortably amber....it's been a warm and busy weekend, so I wasn't surprised they were all nearly full. I'm just pleased there are so many of them. This means that day trippers to the beach are using the bins properly and not just dropping their litter along the road, which is what normally happens. So hooray for the bellybins.

Back home again and I was worried that our dog wasn't eating his breakfast and having been out for his walk, had gone back to his bed again.  Then I realised.  We were an hour ahead - he still thinks it's the middle of the night.  I'll let him have a bit more sleep then.
Have a good Monday everyone. Only 4 more sleeps until Friday.

Day 147 - 26 March 2011

Saturday
Medium paced walk 60 mins - AM
Brisk paced walk 60 mins - PM

I've got a running event to take part in next weekend. My husband is running an ultra marathon with Andy McMenemy, who is (as of today) on Day 11 of his Challenge:

http://www.challenge66.org

I won't be able to run that far - my knee just wouldn't tolerate it (I had knee surgery in 2008 and was advised not to run long distances unless I fancied a knee replacement), but I'm aiming to run/walk as far as I can. So rather than do my pre-planned 22 miles today, I am doing two walks of a different pace to keep everything "oiled up" and ready.

The weather this morning is stunning.  It's already 10 deg C with a 'rotational' 2mph wind (a rotational is something rarely seen...it basically means that it's blowing from too many angles to take an accurate direction).  The sea is like a millpond, with barely a ripple hitting the beach.  There's a slightly misty sky with the sun shining on everything.  It's the kind of morning where everyone has a smile on their face and bids you a cheery "Good Morning!" as you walk past.

I was drawn to the beach and earlier this week, I noticed they have erected the Lifeguard stations every few hundred yards along the bay.  Always a great sign of summer days to come.  This morning, the picture looks as though it's already July.  I had my fleece on, but didn't need it at all.

There were lots of dog walkers out, with their dogs enjoying the sea.  I wished that our dog, Foggy would be brave enough to get into the water, but he won't go near it!

I chose to go up and down some of the cliff paths to get the heart rate going.  It was so warm that it seemed that bit harder this morning.  I blamed my late night last night....it was gone 1am before I got to bed.  That's no good for a Stupid O'Clock Walker!

I'm already looking forward to this evening's brisk walk.

Day 146 - 24 March 2011

Thursdsay
5 mile walk

It was decidedly nippy out there this morning - I had forgotten that the weather forecasters were saying it would be getting colder towards the weekend. They weren't wrong. It was 1 deg C with a 3mph NNW wind.

I deliberately headed out on the coastal road heading west, so that I could at least enjoy a less chilly walk back.

After my evening beach runs this week, I found my legs this morning felt heavy and it was quite hard going. I looked at my HRM when I thought I was nearing my halfway point, only to discover that I had only been out for 16 minutes!

I was listening to more News Quiz which was making me giggle all the way and being so much lighter, I was really enjoying the daybreak. The sky is blue, the moon is out there over the sea, shining away and everywhere seems to be, well...busy - even at 5am. I'm still getting used to this.

I bid a cheery good morning to Mr Early, just as I found my husband walking towards me after his running session. So we walked together on the way back home, only stopping to have a chat with Dave, the 74 year old paperboy, who we were both blaming for the colder morning. He said he had done it deliberately as he knew I had today off. Cheeky!

I have a very special friend spending the day with me today, so will be showing her my favourite haunts before having lunch at a fabulous beachside restaurant. It should be warming up nicely by then.

Day 145 - 22 March 2011

Tuesday
4 miles running, 1 mile walking

Another wonderful morning. And because the sky was clear, it was definitely light over in the east from the minute I stepped outside at 5am. With The News Quiz in my iPod, I was out and taking in everything I could see. Today, it was 4 degrees with a 2mph N wind.

It's taking a bit of getting used to, walking at this time of the morning when it's almost daylight. It feels a lot later and that 'special' feeling that I have when I'm out there isn't nearly as strong. But I am enjoying the milder weather and the views of the sea are so much better in daylight!

I headed towards the long road and could see Mr Early on his way up (his cycle headlight is one of those xeon ones). I wondered if I could get away with taking his photograph as he was approaching. I did it! Mind you....he did give me an odd 'good morning' as I was snapping away. Goodness knows what he was thinking.

OK, a bit blurred, but.....Mr Early!

This morning's session meant that I had to run for 4 of the 5 mile route. However, I kept stopping to take photographs, which meant that I needed to run that bit faster to arrive at my planned point on time. I stopped to take a picture of a beautiful cherry tree out in blossom. Lovely.

There were a couple of foxes running along the coastal path this morning. I wasn't sure whether something had scared them or whether they were simply out for a morning jog...they looked really ragged though.

The moon was high up in the southern sky and it's already visibly waning (is that the right expression?) from Saturday.

No sign of Mr Rude Navy and I didn't even see Dave the paperboy this morning...but I did know that when I finally turned the last corner towards home I didn't want to stop and really did want to carry on. This amazing weather meant that I was able to run along the beach last night after the sun had set - there were lots of people out running along the prom.

Have a lovely Tuesday everyone. It'll soon be the weekend again Smile

Day 144 - 21 March 2011

Monday
Walking 2 miles, Running 3 miles

Can it really be Monday again already? It was a very warm night, so I knew it would be fairly mild morning. Listening to Chris Moyles' podcast of his longest radio show record (with all the celeb guests) in my ears, I stepped out into thick fog. The temperature was 6 degrees with just 1mph ENE wind.

Just 15 minutes into the walk, it was getting noticeably lighter which is really strange for me, as I'm used to doing the whole hour in pitch black.  I also found it quite amusing that the street lights were turning off one by one as I walked underneath them.  What timing!  Mr Early zipped past on his bike...he was busy looking at a fox in a garden to his left, so he didn't notice me.

I was amazed at how many flowers are blooming....every single garden has either flowers or bushes all in wonderful blossom. Mr Alsatian was also out this morning with his scary dog. This is good for my pace as I run just a little bit faster whenever I see him walking towards me! His dog is really well behaved though and in reality is a big old softy. He wished me a good morning as he headed towards the beach.

Given the amount of daylight as I headed eastwards on the home journey, I was really hoping for a good sight of the sea, but the fog/mist was still lingering along the coast. The sea was really still, with a slight ripple, which I think this morning's photograph just manages to pick up.  Just amazingly mild, I was so wishing it was still the weekend and that I didn't have to go to work. *sigh*

Happy Monday everyone.

day 143 - 19 March 2011

Saturday
Planned: 22 miles.  Achieved: 1 hour's walk

The alarm went off at 03:15, but there were two things that stopped today's plan.  The first was a raging sore throat that's been threatening to blossom all week.  The second was the weather - it was minus 4 out there this morning with a thick frost on the pavements and cars.  After getting so cold during my previous 20 mile training session, I vowed I wouldn't do a long session in such cold weather again.

So instead of the 22 miles, I took an hour's walk along the beach with Ian, who needed to stretch his muscles after his 20 mile run yesterday.  The sun had already risen - it was 06:45 and the temperature was still minus 3 with a very cold wind.  I was pleased to be wearing three layers, scarf, hat and thick gloves.  I still can't put these items away in a draw just yet....every time I think the weather's turning mild for the duration, I get reminded it's not yet spring.

The prom is still full of sand and even at this time on a Saturday, full of runners, power walkers, cyclists and dog walkers.  All of us delighted to be out, enjoying a blue sky and sunshine - and all of us wrapped up to the nines!  We stopped to chat to a couple who were throwing a ball for Maisie, a 7 year old Springer Spaniel.  Maisie was jumping over the waist-high promenade railing to fetch the ball every time it was thrown.  Pretty impressive!

We also said hello to our neighbour, who was out walking his Golden Retriever.  He had the right idea...he had brought out his mug of coffee with him.  I may just pop into one of those walking/mountaineering shops today and pick me up a cup I can take outside with me.  It looked very civilised!

This evening is the best time to get out at sunset and watch the full moon - it'll be larger and brighter than any moon we've seen in 18 years.  Definitely worth seeing.

It's going to be another cold start tomorrow morning, so I'll be off to the gym to get some interval training done.  But for now, it's some honey and lemon for me.

Day 142 - 18 March 2011

Friday
60 minutes brisk walk

Rain. Ugh. How is that possible after two stunningly sunny and warm days? I wasn't prepared for so much rain...so I'm now sitting here typing this and I'm SOAKED!!

My lovely husband is running 7 laps of 2.85 miles, which is his 20 mile training session and so my route this morning was taking in his route to at least catch him once or twice.

In my iPod this morning is my radio app, so that I could catch up with Chris Moyles' attempt at breaking the longest radio show ever - he's going for 52 hours non-stop and I've also been watching it on BBC's Red Button. Amazing stuff.

But back to my rainy walk. Mr Alsatian Man was out early and as I hadn't seen him for a while, his dog that runs alongside him WITHOUT A LEAD is a little bit scary at first. They headed off towards a very wet beach.

My new route wouldn't take in Mr Early's usual route, but I also saw my police car (they're still not waving), a silent, but blue light ambulance and a fox. I could easily start playing "5am Random Bingo". How many things to spot for a full house I wonder?

The problem with rainy walks is that I have to spend most of my time studying the pavement, watching out for worms. **shudder** I can really see a much lighter sky now as I'm walking. Due to the rain, I couldn't see any stars, moon or even a decent daybreak...just a lighter sky.

I had a quick chat with our 74 year old paper boy, Dave who was telling me that he had already called the men in the white coats for my husband - he had already watched Ian run two laps at that time!

I was making sure that I didn't walk too briskly, as I'm attempting 22 miles tomorrow and will be getting up at about 3.30am so that it's not eating too much into my Saturday. I've seen the weather forecast and it's going to be minus 2 at that time. I shall remember to take my gloves as two weeks ago, I was almost crying with the cold.

Well - it's Friday. Hurray Smile Have a great day everyone.

Day 140 - 16 March 2011

Wednesday
Brisk Walking for 60 minutes

Problems with the internet this morning, so the blog is later than usual to publish.

It was still mild out, with 5 degrees C a 12mph NNE wind with gusts of 18mph.  These gusts were almost unnoticeable whilst heading out west, but they were eye wateringly irritating on the way back!

Listening to a selection of my best iPod music (instead of my usual audio books and podcasts), I was really enjoying looking at just how beautiful my surroundings are.  The sea was as amazing as usual.  It's like having an artist's canvas with a new painting each and every minute of the day.  And I've really begun to notice the subtle changes with the seasons coming and going.  We miss so much in the hub bub of daily living, don't we? Everyone should have the chance to stop every few hours and just take it all in.  To breathe deeply and think about all the positive things going on in your life.  Some days its harder to think of many!  But dig deep and you'll find them.  I walked down onto the promenade this morning, as the sea was just too amazing to ignore.

The sea appeared to be really calm far out, but they were crashing onto the beach with a very satisfying noise.  There's still a lot of sand washed up onto the promenade with all the recent bad weather.  I think the council is waiting until we're deep into spring before they clear it up.  They've been trying to load it all back onto the beach throughout the winter, but a few days later, its back on the promenade again.

There were a few cyclists making their way to Bournemouth.  They come up behind you at such a speed and completely silent too.  I had to keep looking behind me if I didn't want to get mown down.  One rang his bell but I think a siren would be more practical!  (I thought it was Mr Early taking a different route, but sadly it wasn't).

I turned around and headed back home (into the wind) studying the sky for the first signs of daybreak.  Its really cloudy this morning, so not much hope of seeing much.

I had forgotten how steep the cliff path up to road level is - I need to do this more often, I think.  Although my  calfs would disagree.

I caught the sun setting last night - so as this morning didn't render any decent photos take a look at yesterday.  This was captured at 6.15pm.  There were many neighbours rushing outside to capture this sunset - it looked as though the sun was being poured into the sea.  Stunning.

Day 139 - 15 March 2011

Tuesday
3 miles running 2 miles walking

It was very mild this morning with a sultry 8 deg C although it was quite windy. I decided to take the Coastal route so that I could get a really good look at daybreak as half my journey would be towards the east.

Listening to Ricky Gervais' new Comic Relief podcast, I was surprised to see a fox jumping out literally a few feet away from me. It was obviously just as surprised to see me at that time of the morning and it looked quite guilty as it ran out of someone's front garden.

Mind you...as some of you will already know having seen my Facebook entry last night, during my evening beach walk I stood there open mouthed as I saw a pheasant running along the beach...now THAT'S a first.

I was disappointed to see so much cloud cover, which meant that I wouldn't see a decent daybreak. It was so much lighter though and I could hear the birds singing so much louder than ever before. Spring is definitely on its way.

Heading back, I was able to get great views of the sea and could see more fishing boats out towards the eastern part of the bay. And........joy of joys.......Mr Early cycled towards me, wishing me a good morning whilst giving me a cheery wave. So pleased that he's back. Well, that's put paid to my theory of him lying on a sunkissed beach somewhere. Perhaps he just had a puncture.

The sea was very loud this morning and as it became lighter, I could see how big the waves were, as they hit the sand. Lovely. It really is the best sound in the world.

See? The sky is definitely getting lighter

Morning was definitely breaking and I had finished my running part of today's schedule and was able to take in a bit more of the morning breaking. All I needed to do was to try and remove my thoughts of work that kept creeping into my head.

Have a great Tuesday everyone.

Monday
5 mile brisk walk

Well, it's Monday. Unbelievable isn't it? Where DID that weekend go?

After yesterday's two hour session on the cross trainer, I hadn't expected my knee to hurt quite so much...but it was shouting at me, "Don't walk! Don't walk!". It was tempting to listen to it. But I strapped on a heavier knee support to shut it up and got out of bed.

It was cold again this morning - it was zero degrees C with a 2mph NNW wind so it was back to the scarf, gloves and body warmer - items of clothing that I though I could ditch now that it was mid-March. Boo.

With podcasts of The Now Show in my ears I headed out towards the cliff top and practically bumped into Dave, our 74 year old paperboy who was on his way to open the shop up. Gave me such a fright, as I don't usually see him for at least another 20 minutes. He told me that he couldn't sleep much last night as Todd kept waking him up throughout the night. Todd's one of his two dogs.

The sea was wonderful - it was calm out to sea, but the waves were crashing onto the beach with a very satisfying sound. I could also see a few fishing boats out there too. Their white lights twinkling in the darkness. I was wondering what their catch would be today. They supply all the restaurants and hotels in Bournemouth and Poole and I always wonder at why there aren't more fishing boats out there...perhaps I'll see more as the weather warms up.

I was very pleased to see the solar bins blinking a calm green again. Phew. I headed on towards the long road which is where I usually see Mr Early. He didn't show up again. I'm hoping he's on holiday. I wonder if he's gone on a cycling holiday? Somehow I can't picture him lying on a hot beach somewhere....

I was about half way along the road and Mr Rude Navy passed by. Still ignoring me and taking a wide berth around me. How rude!! He really is the exception around here. Everyone is very friendly and whenever I'm out at a more normal time of day, everyone stops to say hello or at least smiles as they walk past. If I see Mr Rude Navy tomorrow, I think I'll stick my leg out and trip him up.

I headed back eastwards for the last 20 minutes to watch the lightest morning yet....the sun was almost coming up, although the official sunrise wouldn't be until 06.21am. It won't be long before it's rising at 6am and I'll be able to get some amazing views at the end of my hour's walk. Very exciting! To be honest, I just want the weather to be a bit warmer so I don't have to wear quite so many clothes....

Have a good day everyone. 4 more days until the weekend Smile
